"I am surprised at you. She's not our prisoner. She's our guest. We must make her feel welcome here." Beauty and the Beast
|
A victim of one of those "you and all your household!!!" kind of curses, Lumière was once quite happily human, a loyal Maítre d' to a spoiled and angry prince. The prince hacked off an enchantress, who cursed the prince to become a beast and his staff to become household objects. And lo, Lumière became a candelabra. Because clearly the enchantress had a sense of irony. The spell could only be broken if the prince loved someone, and had that love returned- before his 21st birthday. It's been ten years and time is running out, but the curse finally looks like it's getting close to being broken... And thanks to a canon bump, it is.
Finally he's got his body back again. So of course that's when Lumiére ends up on the Fleet. Still, despite having one of the crappiest curses ever, he remains genuinely amicable and light hearted. If you want someone to treat you special, and cheer you up, then Lumière's the man for the job! Just don't expect him to follow any rules any time soon- he's about as chaotic good as you can get. He's currently a communications officer on the SS Wonderduck.
As the Maître'd of the castle, Lumière's personality really is well suited to his job. He's very charismatic and affable. He treats everyone he meets as if they are the most honoured of guests, and delights in meeting any and all needs they may have with a charming smile and boundless enthusiasm. He really loves what he does, and being cut off from people to serve has not been something he's enjoyed at all. He jumps at the chance to show off his skills once again, when Maurice and Belle stumble upon the castle.
The charm and charisma is absolutely not an act, either. Lumière absolutely has a bleeding heart syndrome. As soon as he sees Maurice come into the castle, drenched and terrified, his first thought is to make sure the 'intruder' is given a warm place to sit and food and tea in his stomach. Even when Cogsworth points out the man has no place being there, Lumière's reply is a simple "have a heart". It's Lumière who puts it to the Beast to give Belle a nicer room than the tower prison, and it is he who makes sure she is happily fed and at least finding some comfort in the castle later on. He genuinely wants people to be happy and comfortable. Seriously, if he'd been doing his damn job and answered the door that fateful night, that beggar woman would have been fed, warmed and given a luxurious bed for the night and none of the curse would have happened at all. Way to go, Lumière.
Of course, just because he's a good servant doesn't mean he's especially obedient. Lumière is a rebel at heart, and has little issue in disobeying the Beast's (and especially Cogsworth's) rules if he thinks it's going to serve the greater good. He will feed and clothe people- he will take them on lavish tours of the castle- if it makes his guest feel happy, then he will do it. He also uses this rebellious streak to try and nudge the Beast into growing closer to Belle- continually disagreeing with the Beast's point of view and offering up an alternative that would show the Beast in a better light to Belle. If the cause justifies the means, he will absolutely break the rules. With great glee.
This puts him at great odds with the Beasts Majordomo; Cogsworth- who lives by and for THE RULES. Lumière often argues with him over the best way to do things, either by the rules or running on instinct. As such, they continually bicker, and Lumière is not above straight but burning Cosgworth if the man is getting in the way of him breaking the rules. He'll also gladly mock and deride Cogsworth for his point of view. Regardless of all this, he still considers Cogsworth one of his dearest friends, and the bickering and roughhousing never really goes anywhere serious. Lumière has a big weakness for the ladies. He loses his guard over Belle thanks to his amorous attempts towards one of the castle's maids. During 'Human Again' we learn he often had a "mademoiselle on each arm" and absolutely had no problem in trying to court married women. His first meeting of Belle involve him kissing her hand a little over zealously, despite knowing they absolutely needed her to have feelings towards their master to break the curse. Yep. Lumière has a soft spot for the ladies, and will absolutely try to charm any he comes across. Surprisingly, he still treats them with respect. He never acts like they are worth less than him, he's just an incorrigible flirt. Lumière's absolute deepest desire is to become human once more. While he manages perfectly fine as a candelabra, it's clear he has no intention of staying that way if he has anything to do with it. There's a real desperation to his actions as he tries to bring Belle and Beast together. When Mrs.Potts points out that these things take time, he desperately points out the rose has begun to wilt already- that they don't have time to waste. He continually jumps to conclusions, upon learning that Beast loved Belle, he assumed the spell would be broken, until corrected that Belle had to love Beast in return. He's genuinely saddened when he learns Belle has left, as he realises that without her return, the spell will not be broken and he will remain as he is forever. All he wants is to cook and court again, more than anything. It should be noted he will fiercely protect those he cares about. In the battle of the castle, he organises the other staff into a real battle-ready army to take on the mob trying to break in. He rescues the feather duster maid he's so enamoured with (which one, it's hard to tell) and gives his all to protect his home (and ultimately, his master) from harm. A coward, he is not.
He is a regular human with no special abilities at all and he frankly couldn't be happier with that.
